Inadequate integration of religions into society

  • Alienation of religious minorities

Nature

Inadequate integration of different religions and denominations into society may be the cause and the result of religious intolerance, discrimination and conflict. It is aggravated in countries where there is an official religion which takes precedence over all others and whose influence may have permeated the law and other civil institutions, and in itself, may be regarded as the integrating ideology in the society.

Incidence

Moslems and Jewish people in the former Soviet Union, Mormons in the USA, and Jehovah's Witnesses in predominantly Catholic countries are discriminated against. In the UK, non-conformity with Anglicanism has a range of disadvantages, chiefly among the upper-middle and upper classes, while non-Christians experience discrimination among the working class for employment, housing and social acceptance in some areas.
