Foreign takeover of cities

  • Internationalization of cities

Incidence

The indigenous population of Brussels, continuing to develop as the "capital of Europe", fell by 1 percent in the period 1994 to 98. There is a widening economic and social gulf between international workers and the local community. European Union salaries are three times the average Brussels wage. In some areas, soaring housing costs mean local can no longer afford them. Associated problems are increasing traffic congestion and increasingly expensive office space.
