Due to failure of missile warning systems or misinterpretation or misuse of the data they provide, national or military alliance defence systems may be placed on nuclear warfare alert. Such alerts may involve declarations of emergency over the news media, giving rise to unnecessary panic, and other psychological side-effects, among the civilian population.
