Failure to sacrifice any personal advantage

  • Unwillingness to sacrifice personal privilege
  • Resistance to loss of any personal investment
  • Resistance to personal austerity
  • Contempt for fulfilment through self-sacrifice

Claim

Society has lost any appreciation for self-sacrifice, notably in marriage. In that case it has been argued by radical feminists that fulfilment for women can only come from the workplace and not from motherhood. Prior to the present period of male irresponsibility, men would stick with a job for the sake of wife and children. A boy who got a girl pregnant would very often marry her, or at least arrange an adoption. Such self-sacrifice is now held in contempt.
