Exclusive patterns of communication

  • Exclusive professional jargons
  • We-They language patterns

Nature

One of the techniques that professions and other groups have traditionally used to maintain their status is the adoption of language to exclude outsiders. The less outsiders can understand, the more special the profession appears and the higher its status. However, in times when professional ethics seem more observed in the breach than the maintenance, many are now finding that exclusive conventions are hindering public appreciation of professional services, and even contributing to devaluation of their standing.
