Eggshell thinning
Nature
Eggs of wild birds show a negative correlation between shell thickness and residues of DDT and DDE. Eggs with thinner shells break more frequently, resulting in fewer young. The problem is particularly acute for predatory birds at the top of food chains because the body concentration of pesticides concentrates more in the bodies of each successive consumer in the chain.
