Discriminatory allocation of television frequency bands for satellite transmission

Nature

Television broadcasts require much broader frequency bands than do radio broadcasts. Inside the frequency area where allocations have already been negotiated most bands are occupied or assigned. Inside this area the introduction of channels on satellite television transmission make it necessary to reallocate existing frequencies that are used for pre-satellite television transmission. One satellite transmission can cover an area of the earth's surface large enough to blanket or replace many local transmissions, unless they are limited directionally.
