Benzol as a pollutant
Background
Benzol, also known as benzole, hydroxytoluene or Cresol, is a coal-tar product consisting mainly of benzene and toluene. It is the name normally applied in the chemical industry to a mixture of hydrocarbons of the benzene series, in which benzene itself predominates, in association with certain of its homologues and various impurities. One of the simplest of the aromatic compounds, it was originally used as a "motor spirit", as were petroleum spirits. Benzoline is a crude form of benzene, containing toluene, xylene and other hydrocarbons.
