Appendicitis
Nature
Appendicitis is an inflammation of the appendix, a small pouch that is located in the right lower portion of the abdomen. Appendicitis is caused by a blockage in the lining of the appendix which results in infection. The bacteria from the infection multiplies rapidly causing the appendix to become inflamed, swollen and filled with pus. Appendicitis pain can become very severe and dangerous if gone undetected. If not treated quickly, it can rupture causing the infection to spread throughout the abdomen.
Incidence
Appendicitis occurs in approximately one in every 500 people. Appendicitis can occur in all age groups, but is most common in teenagers and young adults.
