Zembyo (Zen, Japanese)
- Zenbyo
- Zen sickness
Description
The practitioner of zazen may be aware of a number of deceptive sensations. They arise either during practice, as [makyo]
(hallucinations), whether of the senses or the mind; or after experiences of [sunyata]
(emptiness) or enlightenment, when there is attachment to the experience so that the person puts on airs or simply shows in his face - [goseki]
(enlightenment traces) - the effect of the experience. This is a "sickness" - [zembyo]
- as true enlightenment will leave no trace at all - [mosshoseki]
