Vitala (Hinduism)

  • Material impulse

Description

This dark state, unformed but with an impulse towards the dense material, arises when lack of effort in spiritual practice renders the spiritual obscure under a veil of ignorance.

Context

The second of seven (or sometimes eight) regions or hells listed in Hindu scriptures which are the lower realms of the loka and correspond to awareness conditioned by unworthy behaviour or attitudes. Here the equivalent higher region is that of the practice of austerities, tapar-loka.
