Vinaya (Buddhism) [2]
- Discipline
Description
The vinaya is the first "basket" or collection of teachings of Buddha and describes the course of action for spiritual progress towards nirvana. The code delineates monastic and secular disciplines of behaviour (the monk from the way of the householder); and the mental discipline for avoiding unhealthy states of mind. The code consists of over 200 rules, the majority related to the [pancasila]
. Fulfilment of vinaya requires the mental clarity and wisdom associated with a life of meditation and the accumulation of knowledge as well as moral concern, the former being essential for the restraint needed to carry out actions under the latter.
