Uncertainty

Description

A degree of uncertainty is necessary for the individual to avoid boredom and alienation in life, as the predictable may become tedious and meaningless. However, too great an uncertainty may cause panic or anomie, with impulsive, ill-considered action, or fear to act at all and the search for total security. For harmonious existence (such as occurs in flow experience) the individual is happiest responding to a challenge which, although uncertain in outcome, he sees as falling within his capabilities to perform.
