Description

Chapter XVI of the Bhagavad Gita lists the 26 characteristics of the divine nature, the treasures of the godly said to lead to liberation. These are: overcoming fear; purity of heart; steadfastness in knowledge and yoga; readiness to give totally without claim; rising above the senses; sacrifice and service; enquiring deeply into the self; austerity; uprightness; abstaining from violence; truthfulness; controlling anger; renouncing the things of this world; peacefulness; refraining from criticism; compassion for all beings; overcoming desires; gentleness; modesty; control of agitation and unnecessary activity; illumination; forbearance; purity and cleanliness; controlling malice and hatred; absence of self esteem. These are contrasted with demonic or ungodly tendencies: lack of knowledge of what should or should not be done; lack of purity; lack of truth; lack of understanding both of the scriptures and of the universe itself.
