Transitional limbo (Brainwashing)

Description

Following completion of the thought reform process the individual returns to everyday life. This may precipitate a crisis of identity if it contrasts too strongly with what he has been accustomed to. Longing to return to the ordered retraining environment is only slowly overcome as the individual learns to trust his new surroundings and finds internal wholeness and integrity.

Context

A stage reached in thought reform, a system of organized, deliberate and total psychological training which effects individual change through two basic elements – confession (renouncing of past beliefs and attitudes) and re-education (remaking of the individual in the required image).
