Tenko
- Ideological conversion
Description
The individual, under some degree of coercion, formally rejects ideological commitment or admits to a political change of direction. This is a means of dealing with "thought criminals" by inducing the "criminal" to recant, often by instilling a sense of guilt and obligation, which frequently results in some genuine internal change. Specifically, Tenko refers to recanting of individuals from the Japanese Communist Party and acknowledgement of the authority of the Emperor.
