Tacit knowledge in consciousness

Description

In whatever direction awareness extends, it brings to bear an important amount of already stored experience that the mind associates as relevant. To a considerable extent, this tacit knowledge represents an incoherent assembly of valid and invalid information that includes theories as well as perception-processing techniques. According to M Polanyi, tacit knowledge situates new experience in a context that influences every level of judgement. It also is projected and fixed in the metaphors, myths and symbols in which mankind clothes its experience. Examination of metaphors in art and religion, for example, discloses the realm of tacit knowledge and its many forms and formulations.
