Sufi contracted-consciousness (Sufism)

Contraction (kabd) is the state in which the mystic forces out from himself everything except spiritual gnosis. He is compelled to do this by the action of God who induces in him a feeling of great desolation. In fear that he will lose God he recoils from his comforts and practises dying unto himself, by denying his lower ego.
