Subsequent cognition (Buddhism, Tibetan)

Description

This is apprehension of what has already been apprehended, arising subsequent to bare perception and depending on previous cognition of the same object rather than on fresh perception of the object itself. The initial moment of the sequence is the only one not dependent upon the previous moment and is therefore the only valid perception. Subsequent cognition may also arise following a valid inferential understanding, and also from memory of something validly known before, either through bare perception or inference. In this latter case even the first moment is subsequent cognition and therefore invalid.

Context

One of the five invalid ways of knowing of Tibetan Buddhism.
