Spatial awareness

  • Visual consciousness

Description

The human being has been described as inhabiting the space of the world, conscious of all that is around (and therefore not limited by) his physical body, in whatever sense modality or altered state of consciousness he may be aware.

Every form of consciousness may be described as openness to the world, but visual consciousness is of particular interest in that one may choose whether or not to be aware by simply opening or closing the eyes, by looking or turning away. The objects of visual consciousness do not therefore intrude on the body in the way that sounds, tastes, smells and touch do. The awareness of the distance of objects which may in the future be closer (as they are approached) or further away (as they are left behind) implies a looking into, or vision of, the future.
