  • Shame

Description

This emotion is experienced by an individual when his or her thoughts or activities (or the results of activities) do not conform to a standard considered by that individual to be acceptable. The emotion may be accompanied by a feeling of guilt when such thoughts or actions are also in conflict with some externally accepted norm. It is experienced as anxiety, regret, and dissatisfaction with and censure of one's self; and is experienced again on recalling shameful occasions in the past. Because of its dependence on particular moral or social codes, shame is felt by different people in response to different phenomena, depending on social, moral and geographical conditions.

Context

One of the eleven virtuous mental factors referred to in Tibetan Buddhism.
