Sense of place

  • Bioregional awareness

Description

One is subtly affected by the place in which one spends one's life, and forms emotional links with it. Components of this awareness are: perception (awareness, attitudes, memories); emotions (feelings, preferences, values); experience (bodily and sensory contact, insider/outsider bonding, travel). With time, one becomes increasingly identified with one's physical surroundings and develops a feeling of security and self-confidence which may be drastically reduced if one is suddenly transposed into another area. However, repeated experience may have a dulling effect on awareness, and new surroundings can also bring renewal and a fuller appreciation of both new and old bioregion.
