Self-discipline

  • Tapasya (Yoga)

Description

One of the essential steps in jnana yoga, the way of knowledge, self discipline is said to consist of six elements: sama – calmness (overcoming of the mind's restlessness); dama – restraint (restraining of the senses, or organs of the mind); uparati – renunciation (freedom from emotional ties); titiksa – forbearance (endurance of inner conflict, indifference to praise and blame); sraddha – faith (to withstand times of discouragement and lack of vision); samadhana – self-settledness (single-minded devotion to the completion of the spiritual task).

Context

These disciplines are the same as the six great virtues – satkasampatti – listed by Sankara as one of the four requirements for one who has spiritual aspirations.
