Samkhya (Hinduism)
Description
A metaphysical orientation within Hinduism, which posits two eternal principles – purusha, the transcendental self and prakriti, the eternal force of conditioned nature. Followers distinguish between self and nature, renouncing that which pertains to nature. Samkhya is part of the scientific base behind yoga but differs in that it is atheistic as a doctrine whereas yoga (for example, in the sutras of Patanjali) accepts the existence of Ishvara or God.
