Samadhi-bhavana (Buddhism)

  • Cultivation of concentration

Description

This is the development or cultivation of concentration, through methods and practices of mental development. Since concentration is a result attained by mental discipline it is still acting upon the surface level of consciousness and cannot itself cope with residual dispositions (asavas) of the mind, or dispel ignorance and uproot the causes of the miseries of existence.

Context

One of the two systems of Buddhist meditation, the other being vipassana-bhavana (development of insight).
