Rosho-no-memmoku (Zen, Japanese)

  • Childlike innocence
  • Naturalness

Description

This is the state when one has the face of the "newborn girl child", innocent and natural as the human being is on first entering the world. This "first naturalness", however, will most certainly be lost as delusion and ignorance arise. When innocence is regained, one has the face of [honrai-no-memmoku]

, that unchanging and true face of the human being in the original or primordial state manifest by the person who has achieved buddha nature - [bussho]

. This is attained on realizing the state of [mosshoseki]

, the "second naturalness", that of leaving no traces. Then one has face that preceded even the "first naturalness" of the child, but of which one was previously unaware.
