Right mindfulness (Buddhism)
- Samyak-smriti
Description
Exerting right effort, and with right outlook, somatic and mental processes, such as breathing, normally semi- or unconscious, are made conscious. Realizing what the body, feelings, heart and mental states are, the individual is free from the wants and discontent attendant on these things and is ardent, alert and mindful. The characteristic is establishing and attending; the function is not confusing or forgetting; manifestation is in abandoning wrong mindfulness.
Context
One of the characteristics of the Eightfold Way of Buddhism attained with the path of bhavana (meditation) and which, together with right endeavour and right rapture of concentration constitutes mental discipline (samadhi).
