Description

While perseveration is a case of inertia, rigidity represents a failure to shift from habitual thought patterns and to exploit possible alternatives. Obsessional experience is a failure to shift from a preoccupying thought however much one resists it. There is a compulsion, the individual feels invaded by the thought. He recognizes it as senseless and actively resists it.
