Rehabilitation
- Social therapy
- Social treatment
Description
Individuals suffering from mental or physical handicaps are doubly penalized in that, in addition to suffering the handicap itself, they are prevented from fully taking part in normal human activities and occupations. Rehabilitation programmes and agencies provide money and resources to train handicapped people to care for themselves and their families and to qualify for salaried employment. Such programmes may be for people who have always been handicapped or for those who have to be retrained to cope with everyday life after having become disabled (due to accident, ill health, drug addiction and so on). In this way their social dependency is reduced.
Social treatment or therapy covers rehabilitation therapy and any other treatment involving the social environment of the individual concerned.
