Purusha (Yoga)

  • Purusa
  • Witness-consciousness

Description

In the Samkhya-yoga philosophy, the mythological, primordial father-mother appear as the metaphysical prakriti (the ground of matter; feminine), and purusha (the ground of consciousness; masculine). In man, purusha is the witness-consciousness that neither acts nor refrains from action. The universe of reality is perceived as material by purusha because the three qualities (gunas) of prakriti have become unbalanced. A man who controls the gunas in himself sees prakriti no more, but sees the true spirit.
