Progress (Christianity)
Description
François Fénelon indicates that, while progressing in the Christian life, the early stages may be marked by motives of personal happiness. Appeals to the fear of death, judgement of God, terrors of hell and joys of heaven are recognized in holy scriptures and render powerful assistance to beginners in repressing passions and strengthening practical virtue. The grace of God is manifest in this "inferior'" form of religion, and one is intended to follow God's grace. Progress to the higher state of pure or perfect love is made step by step, carefully watching God's providence, receiving increased grace as one improves the grace one has.
