Physical development

  • Physical growth

Description

This is the process by which the individual increases in body size and weight with increase in age. Growth is rhythmic, depending on seasonal and even 24-hour cycles, and may be increased or retarded by external conditions. The speed at which physical maturity is reached is largely genetically programmed but is subject to environmental influences including nutritional standards and social conditions, material and non-material wealth, culture, physical exercise (which may be used to develop particular muscles selectively) and upbringing. Physical development is one major indicator of public health.
