Phosphenism

  • Phosphenic mixing

Description

Phosphenism refers to a body of experiential knowledge derived from image retention by the human retina. Closing the eyes after a sharp and sustained stimulation of white light produces the appearance of a "phosphene", an acute image of the original light source. The phosphene progressively dissipates but it is asserted that its intensity, shape and travel across the retina can be controlled by the involved self. Dr Lefebure asserts that phosphenism (largely his own creation) permits direct contact with the subconscious mind and that it induces a transactional rapport beneficial to total well being. Phosphenism may be deemed to belong to the vibrational group of healing techniques.

Phosphenic mixing aims to develop memory and intelligence. The technique involves alternately gazing at a bright light and then its after image or phosphene. Once the phosphene is present, one forms a mental image of an object, for example of someone one holds dear, bringing to memory their appearance and gestures, preferably miniaturized in the phosphene. Here there is an intensified feeling towards the person imagined and a better understanding of them. Mixing using a written foreign word as object brings improved memory both of that word and of others learned at the same time; using a geometric problem brings understanding of a solution. It can also be used to promote and intensify spiritual experiences. In general, memory, intelligence, ideational activity are all stimulated, then interest, intellectual curiosity, spirit of initiative, sociability and intuition.
