Passivity
Description
Although each individual has to work out his own salvation, the Christian doctrine of redemption nevertheless assumes a passive acceptance and dependence upon God. Such passivity presupposes a receptiveness of spirit, an openness to take what life brings and a meekness to accept without complaint. Certain religions, notably Christianity and Buddhism, strongly advocate passivity, passive obedience and submissiveness, and passive endurance in the face of the pressure of the hostility and hatred of the world. This passivity does not imply inaction, in particular activity to redress wrongs suffered to others is considered obligatory.
