Oversoul
- Ultimate reality
Description
A term used by Emerson to express the absolute spiritual reality of the universe, related in idea to universal mind or world soul, the unity of all individual souls and of all that could be referred to as soul in the entire universe. There is no barrier between the oversoul and the individual soul; by silencing all that is private or exclusive to the individual self and "listening greatly", the individual allows the oversoul to flow into his soul, increasing wisdom and goodness beyond the narrow, human range. Developed from the writings of Plato and Plotinus, there is said to be one supreme mind at the centre of nature and of each individual soul.
