No-mind (Zen)
- Wu-hsin
- Mushin
- Primordial awareness
- Original mind
Description
This expression is used in the martial arts to describe the tranquillity and freedom of the fundamental state of meditative practice, when the mind is totally open and free, with no distinction between the self and others. Mind and body, external and internal, are harmonized so there is no distortion of perception and no attachment.
Rather than the duality where pure mind is looked at and its pure light received, here there is no duality, simply pure seeing, when there is looking "as" reality as opposed to "at". In this looking there is no self, no attitude, no point-of-view. It is a state of non-ego, selflessness.
Context
According to Bodhidharma, equivalent to wu-nien.
