Neurosis
Description
According to Jung, a neurosis arises as a result of unbalanced or one-sided development, or a failure to adapt. Neurotic symptoms may be indicative of this one-sidedness but also of an attempt at self-healing, a drawing of the attention to the condition; they may be the result of a frustrated attempt to find meaning in life. Neurosis may be caused by any of a number of factors, including guilt, sexual repression and childhood trauma. Unlike psychosis, neurosis allows maintenance of contact with reality and only in extreme cases manifests as actual mental derangement.
