Nembutsu (Japanese)

  • Contemplative invocation

Description

In the hope of rebirth into the pure land of the Buddha Amida, the devotee makes the invocation "I take my refuge in the Buddha Amida" (namu amida butsu). This current practice is based on a traditional varied practice of a number of sects, including contemplation (where the characteristics of a Buddha were envisioned) and meditation on the spiritual qualities of a Buddha. Nembutsu was also directed to Buddhas other than Amida and towards goals other than pure land rebirth. Nembutsu-zammai, for example, had the goal of enlightenment - samadhi.
