Naqsbandi tradition (Sufism)

Description

A system of Sufi discipline involving a number of meditative exercises. These have been enumerated as: (1) [Yad kard]

: Meditation on the inward and held breath, remembering the name of God orally and in the mind until the heart is conscious of the truth and inattention vanishes. (2) [Baz gast]

: On the same breath, remembering there is no god but God and Mohammed is his prophet; "it is for Thou, Lord, that I aspire". (3) [Negah dast]

: One the same breath, aware of consciousness, to make a profession of faith with no swerving of spirit. (4) [Yad dast]

: To remember the presence of the Truth, a flavour which consciousness never lacks. (5) [Hus dar dam]

: Breathing out, to continue full attention. (6) [Safar dar vatan]

: On the spiritual journey to replace human with angelic qualities. (7) [Nazar bar qadam]

: To be aware of the steps on the journey - never allowing thought to stray from whence one has come, from where one is and to where one is going. (8) [Xalvat dar anjoman]

: Allowing the two states - of remaining externally in the company of men and retreating internally close to the truth - to complement each other. (9) [Voquf-e zamani]

: Taking the time necessary to consider one's activities, to give thanks for the good and to ask pardon for the bad. (10) [Voquf-e 'adadi]

: To enumerate in one's heart what one has learned, taking wandering thoughts into consideration. (11) [Voquf-e qalbi]

: Ensuring that the heart has no aim but God by engraving the name of God on the heart.
