Mythical consciousness

This is considered a third stage in the evolution of consciousness, in which the soul becomes conscious of its internal reality. In dream and myth, mythical consciousness adds sun and heaven to earthbound magical consciousness, thereby creating a 2-dimensional structure of polarity. Conceptualized by Gebser, mythical consciousness is characterized by its imaginative pictorial awareness and its imbeddedness in natural time. Mythical consciousness originates with the development of seasonal ritual, astronomy and the calendar.
