Mystical journey (Christianity)
Description
Those on the mystic journey live as though nothing exists but God and the obligation to follow the path of duty. Even participation in God's mysterious purpose outside themselves, although voluntary and tangible, is at the same time innate and mystical. What they might otherwise have to achieve through their own endeavour is brought to pass for them by God. Activity is confined to what is necessary for fulfilling the duty of the present moment, obligations are scrupulously fulfilled, but there is passivity in everything else. This may draw criticism as particular acts of piety may be expected from them by others. However, although such exhortations to pious acts may be ignored by those on the way to divine union and for whom such acts are unnecessary, they still seek spiritual guidance from one in whom they are led by God to confide. In fact to reach divine union requires a spiritual adviser.
