Mushinjo (Zen)
Description
A self-induced trance-like state arising in various Zen practices, not identical with satori . In particular it is said to be the state arising in the practice of lesser types of Zen – Bonpu (that of the ordinary or unenlightened person, when meditation may be practised as an exercise for the mind for physical or mental as well as for spiritual purposes, but not in the context of religion); Gedo (that of the religious but non-Buddhist, or the Buddhist who is seeking supernatural power rather than self realization); and Shojo Zen – the small vehicle or Hinayana branch of Buddhism, where the aim is to become and arhat rather than a bodhisattva. Consciousness no longer functions as sense perceptions are cut off and the mind is empty. Continuing in this condition of non-consciousness until physical death is said to ensure separation from the cycle of existence so that there is no further rebirth.
