Makyo (Zen, Japanese)

  • Hallucinations
  • Deceptive appearance
  • Diabolical deception
  • Delusion

Description

The practice of [zazen]

meditation may be disturbed by hallucinatory effects on the senses and the mind. The practitioner may see, hear or smell things which are not physically there, he may have visions, prophecies or be aware of non-volitional movements or levitation. Although referred to as diabolical, such experiences are benign in themselves - it is attention to them which is destructive. Dedicated practice of [zazen]

as it leads to enlightenment will bring understanding of all unenlightened awareness of the experiential universe as a hallucination and of the buddha nature - [bussho]

- of all things as the ultimate reality.
