Magnanimity

Description

On the path of perfection, the magnanimous individual is inclined towards generous and valiant deeds and achieves meritorious actions, not for the glory and praise such deeds attract but in the pursuit of excellence. It is the quality of magnanimity which makes a person aware of his or her capacity to accomplish difficult and dangerous tasks (as such it may said to be part of fortitude), while at the same time it is compatible with humility, because the accomplishment of such tasks is seen as due to divinely-given ability and not primarily praiseworthy in the person carrying them out. Good will, self sacrifice, courage and moral uprightness are embodied in such a person, who is free from meanness, selfishness and vindictiveness.
