Karma marga (Hinduism)

  • Way of action

Description

This is traditionally the way of the householder, when family, social and religious duties are faithfully carried out for their own sake and not for the sake of the fruits of such activity. This is also, then, a way of renunciation. Karma marga will not itself lead to liberation, only to auspicious rebirth; but it may be preceded by many years of study and be followed by years, free of family duties, of meditation or wandering from village to village following the way of knowledge, jnana marga. In this way salvation may be achieved.

Context

One of the three ways of salvation of orthodox Hinduism, the others being bhakti marga and jnana marga. No one is said to be complete without some influence of the other two.
