Islamic transformation awareness

  • Ittihad (Islam)

Description

Among some Islamic mystics this state is one of mystical union, of "becoming" (ittihad) one being with another. In one expression, ittihad is the assumption of human form by an angel or other being. In its highest degree (hulvil) God may "become" one with a human form, in the sense either of a divine possession, overshadowing, or incarnation; or God may become one with an angel or any thing in creation, from a star or sun, to the infinitely smallest thing. However, only God is the eternal reality, and ittihad is experienced by the mystic not as an apotheosis, but as the passing away of his own will in the infusion of the divine will implanted in the soul. Allah is present (hudur) then in the heart-consciousness of the mystic. In becoming (ittihad) Allah, "he" has passed away (fana).
