Divine abidings as meditation subjects (Buddhism)

  • Brahmavihara-niddesa (Pali)
  • Divine states
  • Four immeasurables
  • Apramana
  • Appamanna (Pali)

Description

These are four: maitri (lovingkindness); karuna (pity or compassion); mudita (gladness or being in sympathy); and upeksa (equanimity or even-mindedness).

Together they assist in overcoming aggression, resentment or discontent, pleasure in the misfortune of others, and passion. Arousal of all four states is part of the meditation practice in Hinayana Buddhism. In Mahayana Buddhism all four are qualities of the Buddha himself and of the bodhisattvas who seek liberation on a path which emphasizes the welfare of others and the ultimate liberation of all sentient beings. Here they are included in the paramita (perfections) – the virtues arising on the path of the bodhisattva.

Context

As the four immeasurables – apramana – one of the paths of calming according to Buddhist teaching.
