Deification (Sufism)

  • Identification with God

Description

Rather than knowing the spiritual master as God personified, this is direct awareness of the creator. This may arise as a continuation of the journey started in personification, or it may arise directly through concentration on union with God as he reveals himself in the Qur'an. The process is: tawaja (intense concentration); assimilation of attributes of quality, will and desire of the object of desire; stabilization of this state so that infusion of wills occurs. It has been described as: hulyl, infusion of God's attributes; fana, passing away in God's existence; ittihad, union.

Context

The second category of experience related to the three types of object of desire.
