Consciousness-born materiality (Buddhism)

Description

Of the 89 kinds of consciousness grouped in the consciousness aggregate, some give rise to materiality while others do not. Those in the sense sphere giving rise to materiality (and also to postures and to intimation) are 32: the 8 profitable consciousnesses; the 12 unprofitable consciousnesses and 10 of the indeterminate functional (the mind element is excluded). Consciousnesses giving rise to materiality and postures but not intimation are 26: in the fine material sphere, 5 profitable and 5 indeterminate functional; in the immaterial sphere, 4 profitable and 4 indeterminate functional; in the supramundane sphere, all 8, the 4 profitable and 4 indeterminate resultant. Consciousnesses giving rise to materiality only, not postures or intimation, are 19: in the sense sphere the 10 life-continuum consciousnesses - indeterminate resultant, profitable result with root-cause (8); indeterminate resultant without root-cause (2), profitable resultant mind consciousness element accompanied by equanimity, unprofitable resultant mind consciousness element; in the fine-material sphere, the 5 indeterminate resultant consciousnesses; the 3 mind elements (sense sphere, indeterminate resultant profitable result and unprofitable result, and indeterminate functional); plus indeterminate resultant, profitable resultant mind consciousness element accompanied by joy. Consciousnesses not giving rise to materiality, postures or intimation are 16: in the sense sphere, indeterminate resultant without root-cause, the 5 with profitable result and five with unprofitable result (the sense consciousnesses); the rebirth-linking consciousness of all beings, the death consciousness of those whose cankers are destroyed, and the 4 immaterial indeterminate resultant consciousnesses.
