Cognitive dissonance
Description
Knowledge of one's own and other people's attitudes, feelings and behaviour are the cognitive elements which are normally held in harmony by the individual. When there is incompatibility between the elements, cognitive dissonance arises, leading to psychological tension. The individual then takes steps to reduce the tension by decreasing dissonance. This may be by seeking social support for a view which is causing tension.
